Domain Name System

for setting up DNS we followed the directions on this page:

implementation notes

Installing Bind9, which is a DNS service.
  • sudo apt-get install bind9
  • sudo vi /etc/bind/named.conf.local
    • Once bind9 is installed we use vi to edit the config file.
Editing the Config file:

#This is the zone definition. replace with your domain name
zone "" {
type master;
file "/etc/bind/zones/";

##This is the zone definition for reverse DNS. replace 0.168.192 with your network address in reverse notation

  • ##e.g my network address is 192.168.1
    zone "" {
    type master;
    file "/etc/bind/zones/";
adding zone definitions files:

sudo mkdir /etc/bind/zones
sudo vi /etc/bind/zones/omega-test.ccs.neu.db

editing them: IN SOA
2010100822 // serial number of this zone file
1d // slave refresh (1 day)
2h // slave retry time in case of a problem (2 hours)
4w // slave expiration time (4 weeks)
1h // minimum caching time in case of failed lookups (1 hour)
//description of host records
//ns1 = name server (omega)
//omega = gateway IN MS
ns1 IN A
omega IN A
